Why insulin syringes are not interchangeable with ordinary ones
An insulin syringe is graduated in units, not millilitres, and its needle is fixed to the barrel rather than screwed on. A 1 mL barrel carries 100 units; a 0.5 mL barrel carries 50 units across the same length of barrel, so the markings sit further apart and small doses are easier to read accurately.

A dose in units is the same volume in either barrel — 50 units is 0.5 mL whichever you choose. The 0.5 mL barrel simply spreads those 50 units across the same barrel length, so the markings sit further apart and small doses are easier to read. Higher gauge numbers mean a thinner needle.

Capacity, tip type, and why the choice matters
The general-purpose syringe, made from 1 mL up to 60 mL. Two things vary and both appear on every tender document: the capacity, and the tip type. A luer slip tip pushes on by friction; a luer lock tip threads on and cannot separate under pressure. The 60 mL is different again — it takes a catheter tip for irrigation and feeding, and no needle at all.

Low dead space syringe
The medication you pay for but never deliver
Every syringe holds a little medication in the hub after the plunger has bottomed out. It was drawn from the vial, it was paid for, and it goes in the sharps bin. A low dead space design shapes the plunger tip to occupy that cavity, so almost nothing remains. Across a vaccination programme, those fractions add up to whole extra doses from the same stock.

Modelled on a 0.5 mL dose. The standard hub residual of approximately 0.07 mL is a widely cited figure that varies by syringe and technique; it illustrates the principle and is not a manufacturer specification.
Insulin pen needles
Length decides which tissue layer the dose reaches
An insulin pen carries its own cartridge; the needle is the part the patient replaces at every injection. Insulin is meant for the subcutaneous layer — the fat beneath the skin. Too long a needle can pass through it into muscle, where insulin is absorbed faster and less predictably.

Filter syringe & filter needle
What happens when you snap a glass ampoule
Opening a glass ampoule sheds microscopic glass fragments into the medication inside it. Drawing that medication up with an ordinary needle carries those fragments into the patient. A filter syringe and a filter needle both solve this with a 5 micron membrane that traps glass, rubber and other particulates on the way in.
The difference between the two is workflow. A filter syringe filters as you draw and then injects. A filter needle is a draw-up device only — it is removed and swapped for a normal needle before the injection is given.
